How does the committee work

The residents association has a committee that is elected from its members annually. PRERA needs a minimum of 5, maximum of 15 household to form the committee (the committee can only be made up of 1 person per household). You don’t have to have any experience, and the council can sometimes offer training.

You can nominate yourself, or vote in committee members at Annual General Meeting (AGM). The next one will take place in September 2025.

The committee consists of the following roles…

Committee Chair

  • Guides the association to achieve its objectives
  • Chairs meetings and is the spokesperson for the association
  • Prepares agendas with other committee members
  • Ensures that the other committee members carry out their allotted tasks
  • Informs committee members and association members of meetings with councillors, council and Lambeth Living staff and other residents’ associations

Committee Vice Chair (optional)

  • Shares the workload with the Chair, deputises in their absence

Committee Secretary

  • Takes minutes of meetings and circulates afterwards
  • Arranges the room for meetings
  • Informs all members of the time, date and place of meetings
  • Writes and receives all correspondence, raises issues during meetings
  • Keeps a membership list (name and email)
  • Produces a newsletter, with the help of other committee members

Committee Treasurer

  • Opens a bank account, sharing responsibility for signing cheques with at least one other committee member
  • Deals with money in and out of bank account; keeps receipts; uses an account book
  • Deals with day to day expend-iture through a petty cash book
  • Keeps committee and members informed of the Associations’ financial situation
  • Draws up accounts yearly for the Annual General Meeting (AGM)

Committee Members

  • Give support to the executive committee members, as agreed at committee meetings
  • Accepts responsibility for some of the duties outlined above, perform their tasks and report back to the committee as and when required

Area Board Representative

A Lambeth Area Board is made up of members that are nominated by their registered Residents Associations and self-nominated residents from the Lambeth 500. Area boards concentrate on service improvements and monitoring the performance of the area housing officers and its contractors.

Safer Neighbourhood Team Liaison

A ‘Metropolitan Police Safer Neighbourhood Team’ (often abbreviated as SNT) refers to a community policing initiative implemented by the Metropolitan Police Service. Each Safer Neighbourhood Team is responsible for a specific area and works closely with local residents, businesses, and other organisations to address community safety and quality-of-life concerns.

General Membership

The Residents Association is also made up of general members (free, no commitment). It’s open to everyone who lives on the Palace Road Estate – all Lambeth tenants, private tenants, leaseholders, and freeholders over the age of 16. PRERA needs a minimum of 5% of Palace Road Estate residents to become members to officially registered as an RA with Lambeth Council (meaning 16 separate households).

We are always looking for resident volunteers to put themselves forwards to help run the committee.
