Sunday 28th July saw residents and neighbours come together to celebrate Community Day, enjoying a packed agenda of music and activities.
Estate resident DJs Mark and Derron helped get the day started with a brilliant tunes before Brazilian drumming band Baque de Axe‘s workshop got underway. Band leader Sam taught residents of all ages the basics of Brazilian Samba percussion, guiding us through the various rhythms. At the end of the workshop everything we’d learnt was brought together – maybe there’ll be a Palace Road band at Notting Hill Carnival next year?!
With the drumming over, Future Groove took to the ‘stage’ with estate resident Yul on the keyboard. Accompanying singer Helen McDonald, the band played a mix of classic jazz, funk and soul tracks as well as some of their own songs.
Next up were Brixton Chamber Orchestra, who headed to the estate as part of their annual Summer Estates Tour. The 30 piece orchestra played a set list that jumped from baroque to rock, with guest performances from B Mela and Samson. The orchestra finished with an open-mic slot, featuring some impressive performances from Helen McDonald and the multi-talented Conselo who’d earlier been delighting kids with her face-painting designs.
Finally, Derron stepped in to close out the day with another DJ set.
Whilst all this was going on, there were two steady queues – one for the bouncy castle and one for The Hive Cafe‘s delicious BBQ food. Thanks to The Hive team for supporting the event! If you didn’t get a chance to read about the history of the estate, our display will be making an appearance at The Hive soon so head there to check it out.
Thanks to everyone who volunteered before and during the event. We hope everyone enjoyed the day – we’re already looking forward to Community Day 2025! We’d love to hear your feedback on the day, if you’d like to share any thoughts or experiences, just drop us an email at contact@prera.org.uk.
