Back in the spring, a summer flowering meadow was planted on the grassy area that border the South Circular as part of Lambeth’s Bee Roads initiative. Bee Roads are corridors along our roads and highways which provide food, shelter and habitat for wildlife. In partnership with local community groups and residents, the scheme creates wildflower-rich roadside verges and other wildlife-friendly spaces on housing estates and parks, including meadows, hedges and rain gardens.
After the wildflower seeds were planted, the area was protected from the cold using fleece, helping the seeds to germinate and start growing. The fleece is now off, and the flowers are starting to bloom! The first flowers to do so are corn chamomile, but a wider mix of wildflowers should bloom later in the summer and even more varieties will brighten the area next summer.
